Whom Did Thomas Jefferson Send To Louisiana For Exploration Purposes For The Prospect Of Adding Louisiana To The Map Of United States?

For the prospect of purchasing Louisiana and adding the region to the map of the United States, it was eminently necessary for the United States to explore the land to determine the opportunities that the very region contained. For this purpose, the then president of the United States Thomas Jefferson sent Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to explore the land of Louisiana with a team of 40 men.

One year after the purchase of Louisiana in the year 1804, the Lewis and Clark team set out on an excursion of exploration. William Clark had also taken his servant with him who was an African American. His name was York. He had excellent hunting skills and helped the group of 40 men by taking up certain tasks like cooking and helping other men in different assignments. The direction in which they traveled was the northwestern direction nevertheless they had to stop in between due to the cold weather and spend the entire winter in the region of North Dakota.

A French couple joined the group in their expedition and proved to be a great help for them in crossing the Rocky Mountains. It was in the year 1806 in September that the expedition ended when William Clark and Meriwether Lewis handed over the information about Louisiana to Jefferson that they had found during their journey.
