What Is The Third Rock From The Sun?

In the American comedy series of this name, it's what the three main characters call the Earth; the most unimportant planet in the Universe, which they have been sent to explore. They are given what they assume are "typical" human roles and characters. The commander (John Lithgow) becomes Dick Solomon, professor of physics at an undistinguished university once called "The Harvard of mediocrity." The weapons expert finds to his indignation that he is now the glamorous Sally (Kristen Johnston) Dick's sister and unpaid housekeeper. The oldest member of the team is transformed into a schoolboy, Tommy (Joseph Gordon-Levitt.) The Solomons struggle to appear "normal" while gathering data about human behavoiour. To assist in their researches, they attempt various relationships with Earthlings. The most complicated is Dick's rocky romance with colleague Dr Mary Albright (Jane Curtin) who is touched by his evident passion for her, but increasingly bewildered by the whole family's behaviour.
"Third Rock" won several awards including Best Actor for Lithgow and Best Actress for Curtin.
