The Great Awakening was a religious movement, which spread throughout the thirteen American colonies and started during the initial phases of the early 18th century. An important leader of this movement was Jonathan Edwards, who was a Protestant minister in the state of Massachusetts.

The religious philosophy of Jonathan Edwards revolved around the basic and wholesome notion that all of the people were equal in the eyes of the Lord Almighty. Moreover Jonathan Edwards constantly emphasized on the significance of the fact that ministers should not be the sole source of dependence to know about God and gain religious knowledge. Instead the common reading of Bible was encouraged by him. These were the fundamental principles that framed the crux of the Great Awakening, which contributed a great deal towards promoting the phenomenon of democracy as it constantly accentuated the very fact that all men are equal in the eyes of God Almighty.
