It is used in law to indicate a section. As in.....Article ?? Section ?? Of a written legal instrument/document. That's about all I can remember from my short time studying to be a paralegal. Hope this helps. Janes

Not trying to be stickler for correctness, but according to the law dictionary I have currently in front of me from my days studying to be a paralegal.....that symbol is for Section...not sub-section.
