Raymond Briggs, born January 18, 1934, is a British illustrator, cartoonist and author, and has achieved critical and popular success among adults and children. His best-known work is 'The Snowman' (1978), which was made into an Oscar-nominated animated cartoon that has been shown very year since on British television.

Raymond Briggs was born at Wimbledon, London, and pursued cartooning from an early age. He attended the Wimbledon School of Art and the Slade School of Fine Art. He became a professional illustrator after briefly pursuing painting, and soon began woking on children's books.

His first three major works were 'Father Christmas', 'Father Christmas Goes on Holiday' and 'Fungus the Bogeyman'. These works were in the form of comics rather than the typical children's book format of separate text and illustrations.

Film and television adaptations of his work include:

    The Snowman (1982)
    When the Wind Blows (1986)
    Father Christmas (1987)
    The Bear (1999)
    Ivor the Invisible (2001)
    Fungus the Bogeyman (2004)
