What Is The Ivy League?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The term 'ivy league' caught on in 1954, during a sports conference that brought together  the athletic teams of eight private universities and colleges based in the Northeastern United States - Brown University, Cornell University, Columbia University, Dartmouth College, Harvard University,  University of Pennsylvania, Princeton University and Yale University. The conference continues today.

The league got its name from the institutions' picturesque campuses, where ivy grows on the architecture.

Somewhere along the way, the term 'ivy league' came to refer to the eight institutions as a group. It brings to mind the group's characteristically high academic standings and financial endowment.

Surprisingly, the term that once referred to the athletic dimension of the eight colleges and universities now often refers to academics. Ivy League institutions are usually place in the top 15 of US News and World Report's college and university rankings. They are also amongst the top universities and colleges of the world  in terms of endowment.
