There is a wide range of classes for a variety of machines and age groups, so the specification varies.

In general, though, the minimum requirements are:

Helmet – This is compulsory and must be of an approved safety standard. Helmets must have full-face shield or goggles and must be made of a shatterproof material.

Protective clothing – Suitable protective gear made of durable fabric must cover the entire body. Suits made of leather or a combination of leather and durable fabric with protective body armour are preferred. Knee, and elbow protection is mandatory.
Spine protectors are also usually mandatory and must be brought to tech inspection along with your helmet, suit and gloves for inspection by the tech inspectors.
Gloves must be made of leather or other durable fabric and must be in good shape without holes except for breathing holes. Severely damaged or worn gloves are unacceptable.
Footwear must cover the ankle fully. Motorcycle or MiniGP racing shoes are recommended.

Be in no doubt whatsoever - hitting the ground at 40 mph hurts bad. Hence the full leathers and crash helmets demanded by pocketbike racing.
