Pedal pusher pants, just above the ankle were the norm for woman and dresses were usually cocktail length, which is above the between above the ankle and below the knee.  Woman were not allowed to show their navels. Belly buttons.  Even two piece bathing suit, had to cover belly.  I Dream Of Jennie got in trouble with TV censors for showing her belly button, so they had to change her outfit. Still pretty conservative in those days.

In the nineteen fifties, woman were wearing pedal pushers for pants, they were very popular and just above the ankle, as for dresses, the where cocktail lenght as in below the knee.  They were still pretty conservative in those days   On hot summer days, shorts were acceptable, but not usually bikini shorts and even two piece bathing suits had to cover the navel.  I dream of Jennie show, got in trouble at one point as they showed her navel and had to adjust  her costume for television.  I know when I was young, even though in the sixties, young girls were not allowed to show their navels.
