What Does "Aloof" Mean?

Answer Question

3 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Aloof is a word for being physically and mentally detached. It can be described as the state of being remote and reserved. This word also means unfriendly, distant, withdrawn, and unapproachable. Mostly it describes a person who is cool and distant and who expresses indifference to the happenings around him.

It is generally used as an adverb or an adjective. Initially this word was spelt as aluff and denoted the windward part of a ship. But today both the spelling and the connotations of this word have changed. Aluff is now an obsolete term and is no more in usage but the current usage of aloof was derived from it. "He is a very aloof personality", "being aloof is not always good" etc are examples of the usage of this term.
