What Were "Bat Bombs"?

Answer Question

During World War II, the U.S. Navy devised a project whereby bats could be used to drop incendiary bombs on Japan."Project X-Ray" used thousands of Brazilian free-tailed bats taken from caves such as Carlsbad Cavern in New Mexico. Each bats was to carry a one-ounce napalm incendiary device equipped with a chemical timer. The bombs would produce a 22-inch flame and burn for seven to 10 minutes.

The bomb-carrying bats would be dropped over targets in cages equipped with automatic opening devices and hung from parachutes. The bats would (hopefully) free themselves from the bombs before the devices ignited.

After two years of planning and tests, the plan was eventually abandoned, possibly because of the development of the atomic bomb. But the system probably would have been effective, as evidenced by the destruction of one of the buildings in which tests were conducted by a bat-borne incendiary device.
