How Can A Person Begin To Rebuild Credit After Having To File Bankruptcy( Loss Of Jobs) ?

My spouse and I were forced into bankruptcy after we both lost paying jobs...having already 4 children and a new one on the way.The company I was employed by for 6 years went chapter 11 and then closed leaving a lot of people jobless(in Maine). How does a person even begin to establish credit again?? Its was finalized in March 08. I feel like such a loser.

Don't feel like a loser.  Things happen even more these days with the economy the way it is and it is just going to get worse.  I would look into getting a secured credit card but only with a low ammount on it and always pay off the balance and only use it in emergencies.  Anything you can get on credit you will be paying outrageous rates after filing bancruptcy.  But that is the only way to start to build your credit back up.  Just dont let it get out of hand.  The economy is going to get worse and it will be harder to find ways to get credit.  They say bancruptcy effects your credit for like 7 years but my friends dad is a lawyer and he says it effects it pretty much forever.  Make sure you get a copy of your credit report and make sure every thing is cleared off of it now from when you filed bancruptcy.  If not get it taken off.  You will just have to start all over again and it will be harder but it is possible.  There is a free website I seen on cnn news the other day.  It is free and they answer all sorts of questions and give you suggestions.  I believe it is www.credit.com.  I am not sure I need to check it out too for some advice.  Good luck I hope this helps a bit.

Hi thanks for taking the time to respond. It does take awhile...it just really kills me because I have always had such good credit but losing a good paying job and having my husband go and work with his older brother only to have his brother after two months leave him and go off to another state ( hes very wealthy...good for him, I guess). But again thank you so much for your time.

You don't say if you filed a 7 or 13.  I assume it was a 7.  You can rebuild your credit, but it will take time.  It will be easiest to obtain secure credit, which means the creditor is protected from loss by nature of what you purchase, i.e. (collateral) car, house, etc.  Unsecured credit, such as credit cards, signature loans, take much longer to acquire because you will have to rebuild your credit history.  Creditors look at debt ratio as much as credit history, so in a few months to a year from your discharge date, start trying to rebuild slowly.  Good luck.

I agree with the previous post.
You can also go to your bank or credit Union, explain to them what you are trying to do. 2 Options are the secured credit card but you want it to have low or no extra fees and you want it to change in to a unsecured after 12 to 15 months.
Usually the bank will let you get a CD and take a loan out on it for a little higher rate than you making on it. You want it to be a loan for 24 months. And you want it reported to your credit report.
You need 24 months of good payment history.
You need to try and establish at least 4 lines of credit.
Usually, once you get a line or 2 from a bank, you can get say a Victoria secret card or a sears card.
When you charge, never owe more than 30 to 35% of your available credit. Never charge unless you have the money ready to pay for it. So you charge the $25 item and you turn around the next day and you walk into the store or bank and write a check to pay for the bill.
2 good sites are Clarkehoward.com and my personal favorite...Cheapskatemonthly.com
