Where Did The House Sparrow Get Its Name?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The house sparrow is probably so called because it lives in close association with people and lives around their homes. It rarely ventures to live away from human habitation and is not really seen in open countryside and never in the wilderness.

The sparrow is thought to have entered Britain from Europe with the Neolithic farmers that moved there thousands of years ago. The range and number of house sparrows has increased as human population has increased and it would be fair to say that sparrows would not now survive without humans.

Sparrows feed on just about anything and can survive anywhere that humans create scraps and waste. One colony of sparrows thrives around the barren pyramids in Egypt because they feed well on the scraps produced by tourists that visit in their thousands. In the Middle East, sparrows live with humans in their desert camps, travelling with them wherever they go.

Perhaps the people's sparrow would be an even better name?
