In 1538, Thomas Cromwell, the Vicar General, instituted the first edict concerning Births, Marriages abd Deaths in this country. Unfortunately, they were NOT always strictly kept, hence the constant scholastic argument as to when William Shakespeare was born, The registers chronicle the most crucial events of the Shakespeares, leading to confusion over John Shakespeare. Which? Was it the John Shakespeare, glover and Bailiff and wool merchant of Stratford? Or was it John Shakespeare, corviser(shoemaker) of nearby Warwick.who succeeded in the family business, when his brother drowned in the Avon. This corviser married at least twice! He seems to have left Stratford for good in the mid 90's, yet a John Shakespeare was buried in St Mary's in Warwick( fabulous church! You should see the tombs of the Beauchamps, Earls of Warwick), in 1624. Actually, all of this need not startle us, for Shakespeares were thick on the ground before 1560, and it is only through the scholastic research of the famous Edmund Malone, that ANY of this came to light!

PS , a Wiiliam Sakspere (?) was hanged for robbery in n1248. \the register of Merton College, Oxford refers to a Fellow, Hugh Sawnders, who, because of such a commonplace surname had changed it thus! ( Hugo Sawnder alias dictus Shakspere sed mutatum est istud nomen eius quia vile reputatum est')
