Where Is The Central Kalahari Game Reserve?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is in Africa, in Botswana. It is located in the northern part of the Kalahari Desert in an immense basin of sand that covers an area of almost 52 000 square kilometres. The climate is dry and subtropical with an average yearly rainfall of only 250 to 400 mm. Summer is between October and April and temperatures soar to 38 degrees Celsius or more.

The area is known by local people as the kgalagadi, which means 'thirst' and reflects that fact that the Kalahari is a harsh dry wilderness with no permanent surface water. The northern region is a little less harsh than the southern region and it is richer in water and vegetation.

The Game Reserve has large herds of grazing mammals, with about 200 000 wildebeest, 40 000 hartebeest and many gemsbok and springbok. Other mammals that inhabit the reserve include the giraffe, the cape fox, lions, leopards and cheetahs.
