Why Is My Dog's Nose Dry And Cracked?

The nose is so dry that his nose is cracked real bad. It's raised and looks like a sponge.

It is THIRSTY [and possibly sick]! A dog's nose is naturally wet, and when it is dry that is a sign that the dog is dehydrated, and possibly ill. Get your dog to drink some water, and if the dryness doesn't start to dissipate, take your dog to the vet!!

Take him to the vet, there is something making him sick with this, a dogs nose is supposed to be wet and cold all the time. The only reason that he would have this is because of an illness of some sort. Hope this helps.

Some dogs have the classic "wet dog nose" while it can be normal for a dog to have a slightly dry or just damp nose without having a problem.  Wetting the nose is not doing to help nor is trying to get the dog to lick the nose.  The moisture in a dog's nose does not come from the mouth or tongue.
What is abnormal is the cracking you describe in conjunction with the dryness.  This dog needs to be examined by a veterinarian.  Is the dog having any nasal discharge?  What to the footpads look like?  An immune mediated disease, deep infection, tear production problems (the tears drain through the nasal-lacrimal duct out the nose), and other causes will be ruled out by your veterinarian.  They will also be able to prescribe appropriate medication.
Before your visit you can try Vaseline or Bag Balm ointment on the nose.  Rub it in as well as you can to prevent your dog from licking it off immediately after application.

He or she's probably sick, get her or his nose wet, do anything to get it licking it again, this has happened to my dog before, get the dog licking it like putting a dash of peanut butter on it, only a little though.

NO PEANUT BUTTER! If you read up on nuts vs dog diet you will discover it's like giving them chocolate. It is VERY bad for them!

My German shepherd had this problem-I  found out he had allergies! The best thing to is to take him to your vet-may be your house is too hot or too dry if the dog stays inside a lot like mine. But good luck.

This is a sign that your dog is very sick because a dogs nose must be very wet and cold.

He/she might be deprived of water. Call your vet.

Natural Dog Snout Soother works better on a dog dry or chapped nose much better than Vaseline or bag balm.  I love the product.

Not all dogs noses have to be cold or wet. Some dogs cant even reach their nose to lick it. One of my dogs has had a dry nose his entire 5 years of living and he has nothing wrong with him. Yes, most dogs have a wet nose, but it is not a requirement to be a dog.
