How Do You Tell If A Burn Is Serious?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Children are prone to having accidents and can experience different types of burn. In days gone by, there were horrific incidents with open fires where children's nightclothes caught fire and they were burned to death. Today, we are more safety conscious but even the best safety plans can't guard against every eventuality.

The seriousness of a burn depends on how deep it is, how big it is, its position on the body, its cause and the age of the child. Burns to the head, neck, chest, and groin are the most dangerous.
Breathing in fumes from burning is also dangerous – the fumes can be toxic but it the fumes are hot this can cause burns in the nose, throat and airways.

Generally, if the burn is large, if the skin is very damaged or if there is any sort of inhalation damage with difficulty in breathing, the burn is very serious and needs emergency attention.
