Mange is quite a common problem in pet dogs and there are generally three different types of the condition. Two of these types have to be seen by a veterinarian in order to treat them properly. Generally it is caused by mites and each different type of mange is caused by a different species of mite.

The three different types of mange are Cheyletiella, Sarcoptic and Demodetic mange. Generally Cheyletiella is the least serious type of mange and it usually just causes itching and dandruff on the dogs head and shoulders. The mites do not live long with Cheyletiella mange so it is possible to get rid of them by simply giving your dog a bath with medicated shampoo.

Sarcoptic mange is a little more serious and Demodetic is the most serious form of all and dogs who usually have this form of mange tend to be quite young. Both of these types need to be seen by a veterinarian and you can usually tell if your dog has mange by the constant scratching and crusty skin which appears from it.

An old remedy for mange is sulfa powder mixed into white lard. Apply to sores, caused by the mange, several times a day.

My children, when young, brought home a stray long haired dog with this condition. An elderly lady friend told me about this treatment and I used on this poor animal. It definitely helped the dog that we finally kept & named Clancy.

a dog came to my yard and she has mange also, i do not have any money at all and she is bad off! if any one has any thing they can tell me to help her it would be great. i tried to get the local shelter here to help me bet they would only put her to sleep because she ia a pit bull. i said no way. i want to help her so bad! i fell so bad for her. i brought her inside in a cage and gave her a good long bath, after that i rubbed her down with baby oil and then some anti itch spray. it seemed to help some because when she first came to me she was bleeding and that has stopped but she is still really bad off. her ears are swollen shut and she has no fer. there are very big wounds all over her body and her skin is very very dry and flaky.and dropped. her feets are very big and drooping far down(not like when a dog has given birth) this is worst looking by far. i could really use some advise other then taking her to the vet or using burnt car oil. people who use the oil should be sent to jail for animal cruelty!! please help me if you know of any thing. is there something that i can feed her to help? something i can put on her to make her stop itching? anything at all?!?!? thanks for your time
