How Do You Prune Roses?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Well the best time to prune roses is March and is quite a simple process. You will need a pair of good quality gloves to guard your hands from thorns, along with powerful pruning shears.

Pruning of flowers generally depends on what type of rose it is like in hybrid roses where the small cane is just about the size of a small pencil, try pruning it back to four to six inches to the graft. Canes which are usually the size of your forefinger should be pruned down approximately to eight to twelve inches from the graft.

At times the big canes do not have growth buds; hence it's advisable to cut back as far as possible to the lowest bud. Also trim the outer canes, so that it opens-up the bush to allow improved sunlight exposure and air circulation.
