Which Season Does A Horse Need A Blanket?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Horses should have a blanket on them during the winter and when it starts getting cold in the fall, because need they need the warmth. I've got 4 horses and I keep a blanket on them all the time during the winter.

Horses don't need blankets.  That said if you wish to blanket a horse you should not do so until the weather gets below 60 degrees F at night, or else they get itchy and will rip your blanket because they will get sweaty.  If you are just trying to keep their winter coat at bay don't forget to put them under timed lighting also in their stall.  If you are concerned with their well being and they are in a pasture setting make sure they can move freely, and not get tangled up in their blankets.

Finally if you are serious about keeping the hair down you need to keep several different weights of blankets and hoods on hand, preferably two of each kind if it gets really cold where you are, so that you can repair and wash them as needed.
