The lactating mother initially has to provide all the calories and nutritional requirements for the growth and development of the kittens.  You should allow free access to a really good quality food, preferably a premium "growth formula".  This should provide enough protein for growth and development.  Also ensure there is access to plenty of clean fresh water.
