    The purpose of appeals to fairness is to make the customer realize that the company has honored his request, and likewise, the company deserves good treatment by the customer. In other words appeal to fairness says in effect, "We gave you goods, services and credit. It is only fair that in return you pay us what you owe". Because people genuinely desire to be fair and resent any to the contrary, this appeal must be handled diplomatically. Sometimes the point is made that it is unfair for one customer to take several months to pay his bills while other customers are requires to pay promptly.

                 There is no doubt about appeal to pride is one the strongest emotions of a man. Therefore, an appeal to the reader's pride is certain to produce the desired results. The strongest of the collection appeals is the appeal to fear or the threat. Since the appeal to fear is the creditor's last report, it is used only after a great deal of thought. Before deciding to use the threat, the creditor may elect to send several appeals to self-interest and several inquiries about the reason for non-payment.
