Generally not. While you may refer to yourself as a "co-tenant", you're usually not considered one under the law. That's the protection of being on the lease--it extends your rights and responsibilities as well as your protections.

Every state is different, though, so check with your local authorities.

THANK YOU! I WAS CONCERN THAT CO-TENANT WOULD PROBABLY LEAVE LITTLE IF NOT "NO RIGHTS". BUT , IN THE SAME BREATH DOES THAT MEAN IT COULD ACTUALLY WORK IN BOTH DIRECTIONS? SO IF MY FRIEND HAS NO LEGAL RECOURSE IN HAVING TO MOVE . DOES THAT MEAN SHE CAN'T BE HELD LEGAL RESPONSIBLE FOR ARREARAGES?
ALSO , TO ADD PRESSURE THE BOYFRIEND IS HAVING THE UTILITIES SHUT OFF ON AUGUST 11. HE GAVE HER A LETTER JULY 27 STATINT IT WAS HER 28 DAY NOTICE TO LEAVE. [ HE ISN'T EVEN HONORING HIS OWN 28 DAYS- AS THAT IS ONLY ABT. 2 WEEKS]
THEY DID SIGN A MONTH -TO-MONTH AGREEMENT BETWEEN THEM.
HE IS FINANCIALLY SOUND SO THIS IS NOT DISRUPTIVE FOR HIM. SHE JUST MAKES ENDS MEET SO THIS WILL INEVITABLE LEAVE HER TEMPORARILY HOMELESS.
HE ALSO CAME IN A CHANGE ONE OF THE LOCKS AND HAS THREATEN TO CHANGE THE REST 8/11. IT JUST SEEMS AS THOUGH SHE MUST HAVE SOME RIGHTS OR LAWS TO HELP HER. ????
