Are The Bagpipes Really Scottish?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Although in today's Society we regard the bagpipes as very much a part of Scottish tradition, it is very probable that they were actually in use prior to the Scots as a race being established, indeed they were very probably in use during Roman times.
The Emperor Nero is thought to have played the bagpipes and there is some schools of thought which suggest that he was more likely to have been playing the pipes as Rome burned, as oppposed to the fiddle.
By 1300 bagpipes were in use throughout Europe and India, as well as North Afrcia, but the earliest recorded use of bagpipes by the Scottish was not until 1549.  At the battle of Pinkie, the Scots were reported to have incited themselves to arms, using their bagpipes.
The Irish, French and Welsh also have a long history of association with bagpipes of some description, so this may be associated with Celtic history.  But it also shows that the Scots do not have a unique relationship with the bagpipes, despite their love for them.
