Can My Thermostat Be The Cause For My Car To Overheat Once In A While?

Answer Question

Yes. But (if your car has one) a problem with the electric cooling fan system could also be a problem.

    Try this:

With the engine cool make sure that there is enough coolant in the system

Now start the engine and wait. Be the car is outside or somewhere that there is plenty of fresh air.

Watch the temperature gage. In 10 or 15 minutes the gage should start going up. As it gets to the mid range the engine should be warmed up. 10 or 15 minutes latter the engine should be fully warmed up and the cooling fan(s) should come on.

If the cooling fan(s) do not come on you need to have the car looked at by a mechanic.
