Clothes become dark when they get wet because the fabric absorbs the water content. This water content spreads to other areas of the cloth and makes them also wet and dark. Most of the fabrics retain this water content for some time until it is dried under the sun or by some other means. One can easily discern wetness in clothes even without touching it from their darker shade which discriminates it from the drier areas.

Though this fact doesn't seem to be of much importance in day to day life it matters a great deal while dyeing clothes and fabric. The person who is dyeing the cloth has to constantly remember that wet clothes look darker than dry ones and hence use the dye accordingly.
