People get addicted because they want some kind of pleasure of fulfilment in their lives and they are lacking something in their lives which they use the addiction to fill. Something like gambling for instance makes the person feel really good whilst they have chips but it quickly relieves them of the chips and then they want the feeling back so they buy more chips. Their chances of winning are very slim, so its easy to get into a cycle.
People look for their pleasures because they need them. People want to feel good and we spend a lot of our lives feeling drained and kicked in the teeth by life or other people. Yet, remaining positive and looking for positive ways to fill your life is a really important thing.
Addiction is a way to avoid the problem by temporarily living off the sensations that are caused by the addiction, whether that be drink, drugs, sex or gambling. (or anything)
