How Did The Jackdaw Win The Beauty Contest In The Fable?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Jupiter, king of the gods, announced that he was going to hold a contest to find the most beautiful of all the birds, and the winner would be declared ruler of them all. All the birds preened themselves and tried to look their best. The jackdaw, however, knowing that it had no chance of winning as it was, decided to cheat. It went through the forest stealing and collecting feathers from every kind of bird in existence, and finally made itself a gorgeous plumage from the finest of them. On the day of the contest Jupiter was amazed by the beauty of this mysterious new bird, and declared him the winner. Then the other birds fell on the jackdaw in a fury, each one taking back the feathers he had stolen until he was left with only his own drab colouring.
There was a saying "Fine feathers don't make fine birds" which derived from this fable.
