New Zealand offers some of the most scenic land in the world. The mountains, hills, valleys and plains coupled with forests, vegetation, native birds and magnificent bodies of water. The biking industry in New Zealand is big business, even the government develops and maintains bike trails and parks and camping sites those who ride bicycles, motorbikes, ATV's, mud-bikes and off-road trail bikes.
Summer in New Zealand is December through February and these are busy and active times across New Zealand. Bikers and hikers fill the towns and cities during these months and coupled with the locals, bike riding can be fun and dangerous at same time. Cars travel at 100 miles an hour and although most drivers watch for bikers, truck drivers are less prone to care about bikers. In New Zealand you ride bikes on the left side of the road.
In the districts of the North and South there are forest bike trails, Bike Parks, and camping sites along local and country trails of varied degrees of difficulty and length. There are bike repair shops in just about every town and repair costs are inexpensive. Bike trails go up mountains, down steep, curving hills, through valleys, farms and plantations. Forest trails, lakeside trails, snow capped mountain trails, all provide the level of challenge bikers desire. There are single track trails and 4WD trails with steep sections, rooty, rocky, downhill fast trails and slow climbing mountain trials. Some trails include jumps, which is always great fun and the reason for many tours including medical personnel among their guides.
Bike riders enter New Zealand by car or plane take out their bikes and start riding until the day they leave again. They ride down city streets, through parks, forests, country roads and move with the freedom only bike riding can offer.
You can take your own bike or rent a bike in any town. ATV's, MBW motorbikes, or other types of bikes. If, you take your own it has to be free of dirt from your native land. Many people use new tires for a trip to New Zealand. Camping bike parks, food and drink sites and areas to just sit and draw in the beauty of your surroundings can be found throughout the thousands of trails across New Zealand.
There are many Websites advertising bike tours, races and vacation packages for bike lovers on the Internet. Bike trails move along paths of gravel, rock, dirt, grass and blacktop beside volcanoes, hot springs, accompanied by native bird song. You can ride beside snowcapped mountains, deep sheer sided fiords, lakes and through forests with deer and native creatures, which fill the forests of New Zealand.
There are no statistics as to what portion of the native population rides bike, but the evidence for the love of bikes revealed in all the websites. I would say most natives ride bikes, horses, or walk the trails of New Zealand regularly.
