    The population of Scotland has been around 5 million for about the last 50 years. Until recently, an excess of births over deaths was roughly balanced by out migration. Since 1997, however, deaths have exceeded births

    Scotland's current population is 5,062,011.

      Scotland is a country that is part of Britain, and makes up a third of it's land mass. Its population in 2001 was 5,062,011, this has now risen to over six million. Scotland has it's own legal system, and although Scottish people speak English they speak it in very different dialects.
      The largest city holding 40% of the population is Glasgow, a former industrial, and shipbuilding city. However the capital
      is Edinburgh, which has a much smaller population, and hosts it's famous festival every year.
      The people of Edinburgh consider themselves intellectually above the people of Glasgow, and there is much rivalry between them.
      Scotland also has the largest oil reserves in the European Union, situated in the North Sea. This and an Active tourism industry keeps it's ecomomy healthy.
      Scotish whisky, shortbread and it's game of golf, have been exported world wide. St. Andrews is golf's famous home.
