    Alabama is the state that has a nickname of 'Heart of Dixie' in the United States of America. It is one of the southern states in America and heavily dependent on its cotton plantations for revenue – in other words, like all southern states, Alabama has a mainly agrarian economy. The total area of Alabama is about 51609 square miles that estimates to about 144026 square kilometres. The population is around 3267000, of which one-third are African American.

    Montgomery, which is the biggest town in Birmingham is also the capital of the state of Alabama while the main sea port of the state is Mobile. In historical regard, the region of Alabama was discovered by a Spaniard called Hernando De Soto in 1540. Till now Alabama's ownership has been held by three exclusive countries – the first one being France, the second one being Spain and the third one being Britain. Its latest occupation was by the United States of America during 1819 when it joined the Union.
