Does God Exists?

Answer Question

I can see many people who have already answered this question disagree with me right off the bat -- nevertheless, they all get a thumbs-up from me for expressing their opinion. I just completely disagree.

First of all, you need to define which God you're talking about. You could be referring to the Judeo-Christian God, the Islamic God, ancient 'extinct' gods such as Zeus, Athena, Apollo, Mercury, or Jupiter; you could be referring to Huitzilopochtli, an extinct god for which 5,000 maidens and youths were sacrificed to 600 years ago.

There are so many gods throughout history that humanity has believed in. Many will only put their chips in one. In the Western World, the Judeo-Christian God is the most common for people to believe in. However if we both lived in the Middle East we'd be having the same discussion over Allah.

As Richard Dawkins, a brilliant evolutionary biologist once said, "We are all atheists about the majority of gods humanity has ever believed in." This quote sums up my main problem with religion so well -- the sheer number of gods that were once believed, with the same level of belief many put into the Judeo-Christian God today, are now no longer believed in. Richard Dawkins continues to say "Some of us just go one god further." I go one god further.

Whether you're a theist, atheist or agnostic, or on the fence about the whole issue, ask yourself -- do you believe in Zeus? Probably not. Now give me one direct line of evidence that can be attributed to any other one god in specific, that proves its existence over Zeus'. Ask yourself the same for Athena, Neptune, Jupiter, Marduk, or any other gods.

Many theists will claim, "Well how did the universe come to exist?" or "what started the Big Bang?" Many will attribute the cause to a god -- but that doesn't prove their god's existence by any means. Allah could have started the universe just the same as the Judeo-Christian God could have, or Zeus, or Jupiter. We have no way of telling which god is the true god. There are so many religions, and so many denominations full of people that are convinced their god is the one and only god -- this lack of consistency within theism leads me to the conclusion that god is man-made.

How do you think religious fundamentalists and creationists would respond if scientists accepted the general idea of evolution, but all had varying opinions as to the specific process and mechanics behind it? Creationists would immediately attack this lack of consistency. Explain to me how religion is any different.

(Note: Not to confuse anyone, the scientific community is very consistent when it comes to the theory of evolution.)

Furthermore, we have no need for a god to begin with! Many will attribute creation events (i.e. The creation of the universe, matter, energy, life, the planet, etc.) to divine miracles which can only be explained by a supernatural agent; i.e. God.

First of all, even if there were no scientific explanations for these events, that isn't proving YOUR god (which falls under my original point). Second of all, we do have explanations for these so called 'divine miracles' that have occurred throughout our universe's history. There's loads of scientific evidence, and proof, in favor of these godless processes. It's your choice as to whether or not you want to accept it.

I personally prefer explaining and debunking so called 'cosmic evidence' in favor for a creator god. I've written a lengthy article about the subject which you can view (if you're interested) by visiting the following link: www.thankgodforatheism.org

I do agree that we can't, at least at this point, disprove the existence of god. Similarly, you can't disprove the existence of Santa Claus or the Tooth Fairy, yet we're reasonably certain they don't exist. Why? Because we've eradicated the need for them.

"Well why do presents appear under the Christmas tree each year?" You could use the supernatural explanation of Santa Claus; however, a more rational, factual explanation presents itself that is completely free of Saint Nicholas. Parents put the presents under the trees -- no elves or Santa needed. Similarly, we can eradicate the need for a god by using science to give godless explanations of various occurrences throughout our universe's history. We can also do the same to uncover the history of life.

As an atheist, I do not believe in god. That doesn't mean he doesn't exist. I've found explanations much more evidently supported than a supernatural deity, and erradicated the need for one. In fact, I've come to the conclusion that if a god does exist, his roll in the universe is so minor that there's virtually no point in recognizing his existence.

Oh yes.  He has changed me completely.  I could have never made these changes myself.  His presence is so overwhelming sometimes.  That's how I know.  He is right beside us every minute of every day.  There's no experience like it.

God's will always exist while humans have minds capable of creating them, there is no salvation, there was no son of god and the entirety of Christianity is a rehash of older mythologies.

I'm a very intellectual person, I've come top in maths and english in my country and yet I don't believe in a god. You know why? Because I CAN grasp the concept of life WITHOUT God. So did Einstein(born jewish but changed to Atheist) as well as most smart people, including scientists, excluding George Bush (just cuz you run a country does not mean you're smart, in fact his attacks on Iraq were actually lead by greed). Therefore your theory is nonsense

How is rain proof of god? How do you know he makes the cycle happen? Meteorologists don't have to ask god for the weather forecast. It is all explainable by natural causes... No need for the supernatural.

I agree with Mps, just because something EXISTS does not mean there is a god behind it. Unless he branded his signature on it, all it means is that it EXISTS. When something EXISTS, it is evidence only that it EXISTS!
