What Are The Hotels Like In The Maldives?

I was browsing around (as you do in the evening) and was particularly struck by the beauty of the Maldives. If you've been there, what are they really like? Are the brochures misleading or is it really a tropical paradise?

The Maldives islands are, by all accounts, a truly magical place of white sand, azure water and sunshine. The hotels vary in quality. While the Maldives is very much oriented towards the upper end of the market, there are cheaper hotels with more affordable room rates. However, if you are thinking of going to on of the less high end establishments you may be slightly disappointed in the room decor, which tends to be basic. However, the Maldives are more well known for their opulent and very expensive water villas where no luxury is spared. These are at the very top end of the market, offering complete privacy on your own villa with jaw-dropping views and beautifully designed interior design. However, the jury's out on whether a) they are really worth the mid to high $x,xxx per week, and b) anyone can afford them now that we've all been credit crunched!
