New York, the big Apple is a dirty, stinking, beautiful, inspiring city. There are so many songs written about it, they are inspiring, damning, charming and varied. Since 9/11, there have been more written, but those that don't actually specifically deal with it are perhaps more touching and moving.
Whenever I hear the song The Fairy Tale of New York, I well up, I think about New York, wounded, damaged but resistant New York, it's harsh mentality, but its wonder.
Of course for no class, you can always go with New York New York! Been covered a million times, but Old Blue Eyes does it better than anyone else.
Englishman in New York is less about New York and more about cultural differences between the English and their American cousins.
New York state of mind is one of my favourites, it suggests that one can be in a frame of mind that is like New York. It talks about why New York is so appealing.
My personal favourite is Leaving New York, something I've personally regretted ever since I left, it's a beautiful song which speaks of love, loss and New York and was REMS tribute to New York after 9/11.

There are many songs about sections of NYC, such as "The Lullaby of Broadway" from the musical 42ND STREET.
Steely Dan did "Brooklyn Owes the Charmer Under Me" on its first album, and Neil Diamond had a song called "Brooklyn Dreams."
Another musical, ANNIE, has a song called "N.Y.C." Rodgers and Hart wrote "We'll Take Manhattan."
Lou Reed has written some terrific songs about the city, including "Dirty Boulevard." Stevie Wonder's "Living for the City" is a powerful piece of work.
I've always been fond of "Rockin' Around in N.Y.C." by Marshall Crenshaw.
Another beautiful song is "The Only Living Boy in New York" by Simon and Garfunkel. "I Guess the Lord Must Be in New York City" by Harry Nilsson is another terrific number.
Elton John's "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters" is about New York. Black '47 has a song called "Rockin' the Bronx."
I know as soon as I submit this answer, I'm going to think of another dozen or so!
