Todays PCs are descendants of the IBM PC and the Apple computers invented in the early 1980s. The first PCs were the IMSAI and Altair from the mid-1970s.
The development was possible due to the invention of the integrated circuit in the 1960s - early 1970s.
Earlier computers were huge! The first were invented in the 1940s or so and filled rooms and were full of "tubes" not chips.
