Theravada Buddhism, a religious belief system and practice that was suppressed by the Khmer Rouge, is now experienceing a revival and is in fact the dominant religion.
It is the oldest surviving school of Buddhism, and is the predominant religion of Sri Lanka and other regions of south east Asia, like China, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia, and Indonesia. It is beginning to generate interest and popularity in Australia and Singapore, with over 100 million followers world wide.
The Theravāda school of Buddhism is ultimately a derivation of the Vibhajjavāda grouping which emerged around 250 BCE, at the time of the Third Buddhist Council. These events transpired during Emperor Asoka's reign in India. Tāmraparnīya, meaning 'the Sri Lankan lineage', is the probable source from which Theravada was derived. According to the Theravadin accounts of its origins it received the teachings, known as the Vibhajjavada, which were agreed upon at the Third Buddhist Council.
