How Do You Know When Fruit And Vegetables Are "In Season"?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The phrase "in season" just means that in the country in which you live this is the time of year when the fruit or vegetable crop in question, for example apples or strawberries, is ripe and ready for picking. Gardeners know that the season for strawberries grown outdoors in the UK is quite short. However, there are so many varieties of apples with different rates of ripening that the apple season is quite long. Plus many apple varieties can survive long periods of storage. This means that unless you grow your own fruit and vegetables it is quite hard to know what is in season and what is not. A further complication is the tendency for supermarkets to stock produce flown in from all over the world even during the peak domestic season for that crop. For example, during a glut of green beans in my Scottish garden the local supermarket only stocked beans grown in Egypt. Gardening books, seed catalogues and lots of recipe books will tell you what is in season and when. It is amazing how long the season is for some produce so learn your fruit and vegetable seasons to make the most of really fresh local produce.
