Linux Operating system was introduced in the year 1992. Though officially the abovementioned year was the timing of the release of the software but the development was going on since very long time i.e. it was initiated in the year 1983 with the introduction GNU operating system.

The GNU project was started by Richard Stallman and his aim was to develop a UNIX kind of operating system which was composed completely of free software. GNU had produced almost all the vital components of the software and only the Kernel was required to be developed. It also started developing the Kernel but it proved to be quite difficult and the progress was quite slow.
The gap of introducing kernel was filled by a third party and finally the Linux operating system was launched as free software.
