What Were Shakespeare First Jobs In The The Theatre?

Answer Question

Apocrypha surrounds great men. Certainly it surrounds Shakespeare! In 1587, the year before the first of the great Spanish Armadas, a fight broke out in a inn where the Queen's Men, a troupe of actors, were staying. The fight involved two of the actors. To cut a long story short, one of them, William Knell, was stabbed to death,(in self-defence) by the other. Unfortunately, Knell was the equivalent of what today is called the juvenile lead. In other words, today, he would be Romeo,  HenryV, The Scottish King!,etc etc. His demise caused ructions throughout the company, as they tried to re-organise themselves being a man down. Shakespeare, a young lad of some 20 years, is said to have been holding the horses outside the theatre as his first "job". But, as I said. THAT is apocryphal!
