How Soon Can I Take My Baby To A Public Swimming Pool, And Can I My 4 Year Old Come In With Us, Too?

Answer Question

The really short answer to this question is that you have to phone your local pool to see what policy they have, and what advice they give out.

Most people would say that there is little benefit to a young baby in going in the swimming pool very young.  The chlorine in the water is harsh on their skin, the temperature will probably be colder than they like, and they would probably just prefer a warm bath at home cuddled up with you far more than a douse in the local leisure centre pool.

When there was a live polio virus in the vaccines given to babies some pools had a policy of 6 weeks after the (usually) 4 month jabs before baby could first go in. That worked out at 5-6 months old, and is probably as soon as most babies could really enjoy going.

As for the number of small children you can take in, that also varies by pool.  Most pools have a ratio requirement of 1 adult for every 2 children under 5, but it varies enormously; some demand 1 to 1 ratios. others might allow 1 adults to 3 children under 8.  Ratios may vary again, depending whether it is a public open swimming session or a private party.

It would be hard to take two babies into the pool together.
