How Do I Clean Gutters?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

A gutter can be cleaned by gaining access to the roof with a ladder. It must be kept in mind that the ladder must not be leaned against a down spout or a gutter, which can easily bend or break. After climbing the ladder, you can remove the leaves and twigs from the gutter by hand or with the help of a small spoon, a gutter scoop or a small garden trowel. The dirt which has gotten caked-on must be wet down before removing with a gutter scoop or a trowel. The debris must be put in a bucket or a plastic trash bag which is placed on the roof or the ladder. If you have a bag, it can just be dropped when it is full.

It must be ensured that the down spouts are not clogged. If they are, they must be unclogged by placing a garden hose in the opening. Another alternative is to use a leaf blower to clean the gutter. The machine should be of a good size and not one which could blind you with dust as you must be high up on a ladder in an awkward position. The hose can then be used to flush the gutters with water after cleaning.
