Seven days after GOD locked the door of the Ark with everyone and everything inside that God wanted there, it began to rain. Noah was 600 years old. Rain started in the second month, on the 17th day of the month, on that day all of the fountains of the 'great deep' burst open and the floodgates of the sky were opened.
The rain fell upon the earth for 40 days and 40 nights.
The Ark floated as the water lifted it from the earth and stayed on the top of the water safely. The highest mountains were covered with water plus 15 cubits higher. All humankind and animal-kind and every creeping and flying creature that was not in the Ark died in the flood.
The water stayed on the earth for 150 days. (In today's terms, that would be less than 6 months for the water to subside. On the 7th month, on the 17 day of the month, the Ark rested upon the mountains of Ararat. In the 10th month the tops of the mountains could be seen.
Then Noah sent out a dove to find evidence of land, other than the mountain tops apparently, but the dove returned, then and a second time. The third time the dove did not return. The next dove did not return. Noah decided that meant land was available.
