The country witnessed a coup in 1968 and was ruled by Moussa Traore, a Malian military official for a period of about 23 years.
Traore was deposed in 1991 following which a multi party democracy system was established in Mali with the President as the head of the state elected for a tenure of 5 years; the President appoints the Prime Minister and presides over the Council of Ministers; the legislative body is the National Assembly.
The incumbent President is Amadou Toumani Toure, who was formerly from a military background and who had helped restore democracy in 1991 by helping in deposing Traore. Toure was elected President in 2002 and does not belong to any political party; the current Prime Minister is Ousmane Issoufi Maiga. The President is well known for his philanthropic activities and had recently established a foundation to safeguard the rights and welfare of children.
