Oxidation is the interaction of the different substances and oxygen molecules. These substances can be metals to living cells. Examples are rusting of iron, apple turn brown after cutting and  turning of copper to green etc. Oxidation depends upon the amount of oxygen in air and characteristics of metal which come in contact with oxygen.
Oxidation always occur at molecular levels. Changes on the surfaces of the metals which we see are the effects of oxidation.
