The German poet cum dramatist Bertolt Brecht was born on February 10, 1898 in Augsburg, Bavaria, Germany; he is particularly known for his innovative style as a stage director. He urged the audience to be more of an active participant while watching stage plays and advocated the rational questioning of various social issues which were addressed in the play rather than taking a romantic view of the proceedings; his style of presentation led to the epic theater movement also known as Brechtian acting coming in to being.
Brecht was known for his leftist inclinations which found outlet in several of his works and also caused him much persecution resulting in him being exiled from his homeland Germany and being questioned for his communist views while in the United States. He was a staunch opponent of Nazism and other kinds of fascist ideologies with some of his plays like Rise and Fall of the City of Mahogany having an anarchist undercurrent. Brecht spent much of his later life in East Germany where he died on April 14, 1956.
