I Am Thinking Of Taking Down My Hedge And Replacing It With A Fence But My Wife Says This Is Bad For The Environment. Who Is Right?

Your wife is most definitely right ! Hedges form a very natural barrier around a garden, but more importantly for the environment, they provide a place for birds to nest or rest in and hedgehogs to live in and around.
Hedges also act as a way of providing albeit small trees in the garden and these help, even in a small way, to combat pollutants in the air.
Fences on the other hand are created by chopping down trees, which is obviously bad for the environment and they need to be painted and maintained. Production of paint has a by product of chemicals which need to be got rid of somehow.
So all in all, a hedge is far better for the environment and it will only need pruning a couple of times a year, so it is not even high maintenace and therefore is far preferable to having a fence !

Hedges are a vital part of our environment, eating up CO2, providing shelter for animals and so on. A hedge also looks much better than a fence, any day of the year.

Why can't there be both as a compromise here? Trim the hedge low enuf so the new white painted picket fence slats rise just above the flat surface of the natural & green growth. The new fence provides a great reinforced visual effect with the noise absorbing and windbreak of the hedge is still in place The design consultation fee will be in the mail.
