Can I Bring Contact Lens Fluid Onto An Aeroplane?

Answer Question

Flights to and from the UK and Europe, as well as the United States, have severely restricted what types of fluids can be brought on board planes in one's hand baggage, ever since the averted terrorist plot of August 2006. It is, however, possible to bring contact lens fluid onto planes, but only under specific conditions.

The easiest way to bring contact lens fluid is to simply bring a small amount in your contact lens holder. You can keep this in your pocket, or place it in your overhead baggage, and you will not need to remove it for special screening at security. The other option is to bring a container of up to 100ml of contact lens fluid with you. If you choose this option, you will be required to place it in a separate transparent, ziplock bag, and it will be inspected by security guards upon entry into the secure, departures area of an airport.

You are not permitted to bring on-board a plane more than 100ml of contact lens fluid. As such, you should be sure to buy a special, travel-size container at your local pharmacy. A good example is Opti-Free Express, which comes in 60ml plastic bottles.
