Like all operations carried out during general anaesthetic, eyelid cosmetic surgery does carry a risk of bleeding, adverse reaction to the aneasethic or a deep vein thrombosis. However, these complications are very rare and most people who have the two hour operation are usually absolutely fine. It is important to go to a reputable surgeon and centre for all types of cosmetic surgery to keep risks to a minimum.
Vision is not permanently affected by a blepharoplasty although you may experience blurred sight for a couple of days after the operation. It is only the skin, fat, and some muscles around the eyes that are cut and manipulated – the actual eyeball is untouched.
The incisions will however, cause some inflammation and bruising and the eyes can feel dry and sore for a few days after the operation. Displacement of the lower eyelid can occasionally happen but it is very rare. This is when the lower eyelid is pulled down due to skin tension, but can usually be corrected with some simple exercises. In extreme cases further surgery is needed to correct the problem.
