Is It True That Lightning Never Strikes Twice?

Answer Question

Although it is often believed that lightning will never strike twice, statistically this is simply not true.  There is no reason why lightning cannot strike twice, although after one hit of lightning the odds are lower that it will happen again.
Lightning rods are often hit by lightning.  These are tall metal rods which are placed at the top of buildings or other stuctures to actually attract lightning.  It is connectd by a very heavy wire to a metal plate in the ground (usually buried quite deep).  Lightning then hits the rod and will pass safely into the ground without harming the building or structure which houses the rod.
If lightning could not strike twice in the same spot, then the efficacy of a lightning rod would be significantly reduced after just one hit.  But since they may repeatedly be hit, they prove that this is simply an 'old wives' tale.
