What Are The Symptoms Of Cervical Cancer?

Answer Question

4 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

    Early stage cervical cancer produces virtually no symptoms, and is usually only detected because of screening programmes that sample cells from the cervix and examine them for any abnormalities.  The only good thing about cervical cancer is that it spreads relatively slowly.  In the UK the recommended interval between screening is every three years; in the United States it is every year.  Most cases occur after the age of 50.

    When cervical cancer reaches Stage 2 and above it is more likely to manifest some of the following symptoms:

    • Vaginal bleeding between periods, after intercourse or after the menopause;
    • Pelvic or other pain during intercourse;
    • Persistent lower back pain;
    • Unusual discharge, especially if it has a foul odor.

    Sometimes cervical cancer is not detected until it has spread to another part of the body and symptoms from this secondary cancer become apparent.  The prognosis for survival in such cases is very poor, as low as 25%.

        It's important to go for regular smear tests to pick up pre-cancerous changes so cells can get treated before they can change to cancerous. Symptoms can be bleeding between periods or bleeding after sex. Sex can also become painful. You can also suffer from lower abdominal pain. The pre-cancerous changes which can be easily treated don't have symptoms so smear tests are very important and can help prevent it.

        I have had abnormal paps for the last 3years, and every 6mos I have to go in and have very painful procedures done. Why, if I keep having abnormal paps that my dr doesn't do something. These procedures they do of taking a biopsi of the cervix are very painful and are stressing me out. How can I be more proactive towards these abnormal paps.
