Are There Any Standard Requirements From Backgammon Equipment?

Although equipment is generally up to the owner, there are certain regulations that need to be in place during game or tournament play. These are designed to ensure that all players start from an equal vantage point and to help prevent the possibility of cheating. Many tournaments and backgammon games ban equipment that is either too small or too large. The equipment should be a standard size to keep uniformity and prevent unfair advantage. Dice known as precision dice are a necessity in all match game as they prevent the possibility of the dice being weighted and so make the rolls fair at all times.

Lipped cups are also standard equipment for tournament play. These prevent the roller from being able to manipulate the number that is rolled on the dice. The checkers are usually between one and a half and two inches in size as these are most comfortable to play with and also fit on most boards. Wooden boards are not allowed. The main reason for this is because of noise and the effect they have upon the dice tumble. The uniformity is required to ensure fairness and fun for all the backgammon players involved.
